Staff and residents enjoy keeping busy at Broomhills care home in Rochford, Essex.

Staff take residents on swimming trips to their local leisure centre, which is thoroughly enjoyed by all. For some gentle physical exercise, residents also tried out some pedal exercisers, which are specifically designed for low impact rehabilitation and light workout activity.

In the spirit of staying fit and moving, Thiza, our resident, took to the local rock-climbing wall in Basildon and she did fantastically! Thiza expressed that rock climbing was on her bucket list she would love to go wall climbing, so with risk assessments all in place and the support of her loved ones, she fulfilled a dream!

Participating in exercise in a safe environment can help people living with dementia to achieve a sense of purpose, as well as all the health benefits from cardiovascular exercise.

Broomhills also took their residents to ‘Just Ride’, a specialist facility in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, which caters for all health conditions and disabilities, and allows for a safe, traffic-free cycling experience. Staff and residents had a lovely time and will likely return very soon for more fun.

It is paramount that those of an elderly age stay hydrated, and to encourage this and pump a bit of fun into it, staff led a session making special hydration sweets with residents. From making their own sweet mixture, to pouring and setting the sweets, residents really got involved with this task – and now have some delicious sweets to show for it!
